Delhi Wakes Up to Hazardous Haze After Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that registered in the "critical" category.

Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements

Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an AQI over 500, which translates to ten times the healthy limit set by the WHO.

Particular areas, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times above healthy limits.

Firecracker Restrictions and Recent Changes

Since 2020, authorities had enforced a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that engulfs the capital as winter begins.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed local government petitioned the judicial authority to seek a easing of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a middle ground between "tradition and public health".

Court Verdict and Enforcement

Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated hours throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was widespread flouting of the designated hours across the city, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Several monitoring devices throughout the city recorded contamination peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous measurements observed during Diwali in at least three years.

Cross-Border Consequences

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also initiated a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's the Punjab region partially attributing deteriorating atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on pollutants originating in India following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

The dangerously high concentrations of air contamination in the city have persisted as a significant issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition showing no improvement.

Around the festival period, the concentration of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the worst readings ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Multiple Pollution Sources

The problem in the capital is attributed to a mix of various sources including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, development work, rubbish burning and smoke from crop residue ignition in neighbouring regions of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, farmers regularly set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, generating hazardous haze that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air descends.

Health and Economic Consequences

Both financial and medical toll on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the capital region is substantial, according to multiple research.

The contaminated air results in increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can potentially cause malignancies.

Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for ten thousand untimely deaths per year in the capital.
