No fewer than thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
