A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
