Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of space.
The group of women also comprised experts in various fields.
