Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in First Speech
In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an bold start to his administration.
A Historic Figure
The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani added.
Ignoring counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
A Sweeping Platform
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing Political Challenges
The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.
The Core Tests of Governing
Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.
As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
